Hi Georg. That is a very valid point and I have changed it to dieting. Thanks for the feedback.
I was using the word in a colloquial sense.

Hi Mary. The "rule of thumb" comes from a throw away comment on a Boston radio show in the 1970's. The radio announcer asked a doctor how much water should he be drinking. It was autumn and the doctor gave the estimate of 6 glasses.
That figure is completely irrelevant to most people on earth as it is for a period of mild temperatures and medium humidity in Boston.

One of the worst misuses of a quote I have ever come across! Very sad really.

Thanks for a great series of articles. Drawing from my own background--which includes being a singer and actor, I often use the metaphor of winning the role of starring actor (as well as playwright and director) of our ideal life. Then every day becomes a new rehearsal period during which we begin to learn all of the (metaphorical) elements for a successful performance (e.g., lines, blocking, costuming, relationships w/ the other characters, etc. Then, in time, it's opening night......

Comment on Why Dieting does not work I by Paul Moore

In my case, I've never had a problem with weight, I eat anything I like, whenever I like. I have had struggles with other lifestyle issues, though, so I'll use that experience as if it applied to dieting.

I've always considered dieting to be similar to being on my best behaviour. - While effort is being exerted and I'm trying really hard, it'll work, and it'll probably work well.

Then......something else will happen, I'll need to focus on something else and will need to exert effort in another area of life, and so the pressure to continue the diet is released.

*Snap*! Just like a rubber band, life returns to normal in the area of dieting, but with a vengeance.

Things will be just that little bit worse because I didn't accept myself in the first place, and now I will have failed at what I wanted to do in the area of losing weight.

I ask myself what one change I can make which will be a single, one-off lifestyle change which will continue for a lifetime and require no effort to continue? What one change can I make that will be included into my natural way of being and part of the way I see myself?

In the case of weight, will I force myself to go to the gym at least 4 times a week as a special effort? - Instead, how about restructuring my life so I need to lead a lifestyle that includes exercise? How about walking or riding a bike to work with a friend? - Not to lose weight, but because it's a natural lifestyle choice that is sustainable.

------

Paul Moore is an entrepreneur who has been living on stress for 20 years, eats unhealthily and smokes a lot. He has been renovating a house for a year, enjoys walking and gardening. - One day he'll ride his bike again. Maybe he'll give up smoking at some point too.
