Anger and nutrition
I was just reading a story about anger managment and CHD. Â It was posted at ScienceDaily. A really interesting site. You can check it out later. I will put the link at the bottom of the page.
So, here is my question, What does nutrition have to with anger and aggression?
The simple answer is, lots!!
Many nutrients and foods add to impulse control issues. It is easier to lash out after a big high protein high carb meal. Missing vitamins and minerals can cause anxiety and depression. Â Copper deficiency moderates Zinc deficiency which can cause anxiety and depression. Â B6 and B12 both affect our moods.Â
Strangely, to me at least, it seems that many of the government and social dollars spent on violence prevention do not go towards nutritition and counselling for the men who are often the cause of the problem and a victim of the issue. Â Most of our money is spent on refuges, for women, and jails, for men.Â
Additionally, all of that anger and frustration has a really negative affect on the heart.
So what can we do? Â Most of the answer lies in fairly simple things. Â Low levels of exercise, smoking, alcohol, high carbohydrate and a high (refined) fat diets all lead to increased levels of anger and violence. Â And while I am not a vegetarian, many religous groups regulate diet for their disciples in order to manage aggression and hostility. Â Being a vegan or a vegatarian seems to make a difference for many people.
So the simplest answer is;
- Â Plenty of salad greens.
- unrefined oils (esp flaxseed or walnut).
- Non starchy vegetables.
- Lean free Range meat.
- Daily activity
- Good nights sleep (Min 7.5 hours)
These can all help you to avoid the CHD that goes with anger and hostility.
